What happens when a railway level crossing closes in a small village in Kerala, India?
For a few minutes, everyday village life pauses.
The warning begins. The railway gate closes. Motorcycles, bicycles, autorickshaws and pedestrians wait on either side. A locomotive horn can be heard in the distance. The train approaches, rushes through the crossing, disappears down the railway line – and slowly the village returns to normal.
