Indian Railways is the lifeline of the nation, moving millions daily. Yet a simple glance at the washbasins on many trains exposes a serious problem. Rusted, unhygienic, and poorly maintained facilities are not only an embarrassment, but a genuine public health risk.
This is not due to a lack of technology or resources. Stainless steel basins, good fittings, and soap dispensers are easily available and affordable, as shown in the potential photo comparison. Many countries have maintained world-class train sanitation for decades — and India, with its engineering prowess and multi-crore railway budget, can do it too.
So what’s missing? Political will and consistent accountability.
Indian travelers deserve dignity and safe hygiene standards. In a 21st-century transport system, this should not be considered a luxury but the bare minimum.
It is time for policymakers to prioritize passenger dignity, modern facilities, and the overall experience — not just new trains and PR campaigns.
We deserve better. Let’s demand better.
