Pit Line Construction Progressing at Palakkad Town Railway Station
The long-pending pit line project at Palakkad Town Railway Station has reached its final phase, bringing a major infrastructure boost to the Palakkad railway division. Railway officials said the construction of the division’s third pit line is now progressing quickly on an eight-acre site adjacent to the station.
This new facility is expected to strengthen train maintenance operations in Palakkad and remove a long-standing hurdle that has affected the launch of more train services from the division headquarters.
What is being built at Palakkad Town?
The project is not limited to a pit line alone. It includes a full set of railway operational and maintenance infrastructure required to handle train servicing and coach management more efficiently.
- Pit line for primary maintenance of trains
- Stabling line for keeping trains ready for service
- Sick line for coach maintenance and repairs
- Shunting line for lifting and installing coaches using cranes
- Signal system and sub-station support infrastructure
According to the railways, nearly 80 percent of the work on these components has already been completed.
Project cost and expected opening
The new pit line is being built at a cost of Rs 62 crore. Railway officials expect the remaining work to be completed soon, and the facility is likely to be opened in May.
The project was earlier expected to be commissioned in December, but the timeline was pushed back due to the failure of the contractor to complete the work as scheduled.
Why this project matters for Palakkad
Palakkad is the headquarters of the railway division, yet the absence of a pit line at the station has been a serious operational limitation. Because of this, long-distance train services in the Palakkad division have traditionally started from places like Mangalore, where pit line infrastructure already exists.
Once the new pit line at Palakkad Town becomes operational, that long-standing gap will be reduced. Railways are planning to start five trains from Palakkad Town within two years of commissioning. Officials also expect that three long-distance trains may be started after the project is completed.
There is also a possibility that some train services from Coimbatore may be extended to Palakkad, improving connectivity for passengers in the region.
Current maintenance pressure in the division
At present, pit line facilities in the Palakkad division exist only at Mangalore and Shoranur.
- Mangalore has three pit lines and handles maintenance for 10 express and passenger trains
- Shoranur Junction has a pit line system with capacity for 12 coaches
- Railways say the Shoranur facility cannot be expanded because of space limitations
Maintenance work on multiple trains is already under pressure, and officials say the lack of proper infrastructure has created operational difficulties. In that context, the completion of the Palakkad Town pit line is expected to significantly improve the division’s maintenance capacity.
How the new pit line will help
The stabling line and sick line are expected to be completed without delay, allowing trains to move directly from the stabling line to the platform when required. This will help the station manage train arrivals, departures and maintenance more effectively.
In practical terms, the project can help Palakkad Town Railway Station become a stronger operational centre by:
- Supporting the launch of new train services
- Reducing dependence on distant maintenance centres
- Improving coach servicing and train readiness
- Helping handle more long-distance operations from Palakkad
A major step for Palakkad railway infrastructure
The near-completion of the third pit line at Palakkad Town Railway Station marks a major development for the Palakkad railway division. For years, the absence of such a facility at the divisional headquarters limited train operations and long-distance service expansion. That is now set to change.
Once commissioned, this Rs 62 crore project is expected to improve maintenance capacity, support new train services and strengthen Palakkad’s role in railway operations across the region.
